Spacemarket won tender to take over the vacant, heritage-listed Victoria Hall from the City of Fremantle in September 2019. When we took carriage of the building, built in 1897, we found it in a poor state both inside and out. We quickly set about trying to bring life to the building by activating it with local community groups and private events, To do so we had to re-install interior and exterior lighting, and with help from one of our first tenants - Renato Fabretti of Fremantle Theatre Company - set about painting and refurbishing the interior.
The Hobbs Bar was turned into the hugely popular Dugite Bar, run by Lance Simpson and Christian Dillon, who hosted a roster of DJ events and live music.
Out the back we turned the former offices into recording and writing studios, and Fremantle Theatre Company set up a performance rehearsal space in the rear of the venue.
Tenants included FTC, Fremantle Biennale, musicians Benjamin Booker and Pond.
In 2021, Spacemarket signed the lease over to Fremantle Theatre Company who have done excellent work running it as a local theatre company and host both shows - including actress Kate Walsh in the premier show, The Other Place - acting workshops and rehersal spaces for local actors.
